Quote inspired by This year’s Cinderella story, Florida Gulf Coast University:
“While it is well enough to leave footprints on the sands of time, it is even more important to make sure they point in a commendable direction.”
If you haven’t had a chance to watch the games this years tournament, a new program has been introduced to the world. While schools with decades of history and achievements set forth to continue their legacy by winning another post season trophy, you can’t fail to mention the program that is in the process writing the first few pages of their own history. While the school was formed in 90’s, the basketball program wasn’t formed but 10 years ago, and the team has only been eligible to play division 1 for a handful of years . When most underdog competitors back down from the more known and historic teams , they’ve had no problem letting teams know that they deserve to “dance” with the best of them. It wasn’t enough for them to get a bid to the tournament , they decided to continue shocking the world and writing their own history by making it to the sweet 16.
To say that the program is on the incline is an understatement . Sit back and watch as The University of Florida Gulf Coast, aka”Dunk City” , look to start a legacy that will hopefully go beyond this March.
In 1923, Robert “Bob” Douglas formed and managed the first black professional basketball team , the New York Renaissance, also known as, The ‘Rens’. Douglas’s worked out a deal where his team could use the Renaissance Ballroom as their home gym. Once their home court was secured , Douglas was able to form his roster and the team was up and running . For the next 25 years , the “Rens” made their presence felt in the basketball world, winning championship after championship in the Colored basketball leagues, and also collecting wins against against the White national Basketball league . In 1939, the Rens won the inaugural World Championship of Professional Basketball . Because of their dominance on the court and their trailblazing efforts, the team was enshrined in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame, along with a few individual inductees from the original team . In honor of Black history month, Next Level basketball would like to salute the New York Renaissance , aka the ‘Rens’.
